ROAD SAFETY IN TANZANIA: WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS?
Road safety is a serious problem worldwide, and especially so in developing nations such as Tanzania. The government of Tanzania has made a strong commitment to deal with road safety problems by developing and implementing a comprehensive road safety program. This paper discusses the problems that have caused the current road safety situation in Tanzania, focusing on the institutional set up of road safety activities, traffic legislation, law enforcement, training and education, vehicle safety/inspection, road traffic management, and post-collision assistance. Recommendations are provided as to what still remains to be done to reverse the current situation to help mitigate the number of accidents and fatalities caused by traffic accidents.
