WATERWAYS MANAGEMENT INVOLVES VARIED ISSUES
This article discusses the challenges of managing U.S. multiple-use waterways, especially the challenges posed by environmental protection, security and user conflict. To address these challenges, the U.S. Coast Guard's Office of Waterways Management has established an initiative to involve all stakeholders in issues related to the marine transportation system. One action issue is to get the recreational boating community and boating law administrators more involved in the Harbor Safety and Security Committees that are active in major port cities and have substantial influence on decisions involving multiple-use waterways. The Coast Guard also needs the cooperation of the recreational boating public in such diverse issues as protecting waterways from terrorism and special event planning/permitting to avoid conflicting uses on the same waterway.
