RAPID BRIDGE DECK REPLACEMENT WITH EXODERMIC DECK PANELS
An exodermic deck is constructed from an unfilled steel grid composite with a reduced depth reinforced concrete slab that is either precast or cast-in-place on top of it. The modular and lightweight nature of this design makes it particularly well suited to rapid deck replacement. Many bridge re-decking projects are located in congested metropolitan areas, carrying traffic in excess of original design capacity. Any bridge work that disrupts the normal flow of traffic leads to major congestion and delays and increases the chances for accidents. A number of exodermic deck projects have been completed at night with precast panels, with the entire structure open to daytime traffic.
