REHABILITATION OF SEPTA BRIDGE 6.44

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's (SEPTA's) Bridge 6.44, originally constructed in 1914, was in need of extensive rehabilitation, including removal of lead-based paint, repainting steel members, strengthening girder webs in regions of excessive corrosion, replacing concrete ballast curbs, waterproofing decks, replacing movable components of expansion bearings, and refacing concrete abutments and wingwalls. Details used to economically rehabilitate each major bridge components so that no significant maintenance will be required for 20 years are presented. Construction techniques permitting SEPTA to maintain rail operations during construction are described.
