SOLUTIONS TO SEISMIC PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS OF FLARED BRIDGE COLUMNS

A joint analytical and experimental research program is performed to verify the potential seismic performance issues of flared columns. Ten 40 percent scale model columns, including retrofit and improved new design solutions, are constructed and tests in the Charles Lee Powell Structural Research Laboratories at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). A finite element fiber model is utilized to analyze these columns. Practical and effective solutions to design and retrofit flared columns are developed and proposed.
