SEISMIC RETROFIT OF THE CARQUINEZ APPROACH SPAN BRIDGE

A seismic strengthening design for the Carquinez Approach Span Bridge is currently being performed for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to upgrade the existing structures located in the Bay area of northern California. The span length of the Carquinez Approach Span Bridges range from 120 feet to 180 feet. Pier height varies from 35 feet to 110 feet. Lack of positive connection of the steel pile heads, poor concrete confinement, inadequate bar splice length, vulnerability of rocker bearings, and potential failure of steel gusset connections are the major challenges. Retrofit techniques include footing strengthening, column casing, column post tensioning, bearing replacement and cross frame retrofit.
