PRIVATISATION BOOSTS RAIL INVESTMENT IN MELBOURNE
The recent privatization of Melbourne's streetcar and rail networks, introduction of automated ticketing, and route development are having a dramatic impact on the rail network in the Australian state of Victoria. Melbourne, with a population of 3.4 million people, has a 300 km electrified suburban rail network plus 245 km of streetcar lines. Under the rail privatization program completed last year, both the streetcar and suburban rail networks were divided in half, while V/Line Passenger, which operates diesel regional and long distance trains, was separated from V/Line Freight. The objective is to achieve substantial improvements to rolling stock, service levels, and performance. The franchizing program will save an estimated $A 1.8 billion in reduced subsidies over the life of the franchises.
