EUROPEAN FREIGHT TRANSPORT AND THE ENVIRONMENT: EMPIRICAL APPLICATIONS AND SCENARIOS. IN: TRANSPORT LOGISTICS
A balanced development of commodity transport in the context of both efficiency goals and environmental objectives is vital for a sustainable development of European economy. This paper highlights the relevant role of the Alpine chain in the framework of existing scenarios and forecasts on freight flows in Europe. It was determined that a global policy perspective should take into account the potential and role of the Alpine freight transport. The paper also depicts transport flows of commodities in an interregional European setting with reference to the Alpine crossing area. Various estimates of the impacts of time/costs on transport movements have been made based on an extensive data set.
