COMPARISON OF EXTERNAL COSTS OF RAIL AND TRUCK FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION. IN: TRANSPORT LOGISTICS
This paper's purpose is to combine the best available sources of information pertaining to private and external costs that arise from intercity freight railroad operations. The results of the analysis are compared with a parallel analysis of private and external costs associated with general freight truckload trucking. On per-ton-mile basis, trucking generates over three times the external costs of any of the freight trains considered. The general types of external costs considered include: accidents, fatalities, injuries, property damage; emissions (air pollution and greehouse gases); and noise.
