DEVELOPMENTS IN THE RETAIL MARKET AND THEIR EFFECT ON FREIGHT DISTRIBUTION. IN: TRANSPORT LOGISTICS

This paper identifies the nature of and reasons for the changes in physical distribution and then considers likely future trends. The implications of these changes are examined for the use of the road network, particularly the increasing use of the motorway and primary route networks. Changes in physical distribution in retailing are bringing about major changes in the use of freight transport, particularly by increasing the size of vehicles. The paper identifies a key feature of any improvement in the road network is what it does for predictability of trip times as well as for average trip times. Benefits to commercial vehicles of road improvements, calculated as straight time savings, tend to underestimate the true business potential.
