EXAMPLE 1B: ALTERNATIVE DESIGN FOR THE NON-SLENDER BEAM (DEEP BEAM). IN: EXAMPLES FOR THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL CONCRETE WITH STRUT-AND-TIE MODELS

A 20-foot span deep beam was designed using the strut-and-tie method according to ACI 318-02 Appendix A. The beam is 20 inches wide by 80 inches deep and carries 2 concentrated factored loads, V-sub-u, of 360 kips each. Bearing plates of 18 x 20 inches are provided at all loading and support locations. The self-weight was not considered in the design. The compressive strength of concrete, f'-sub-c, and yield strength of steel reinforcement, f-sub-y, are taken as 4 ksi and 60 ksi, respectively. A simple strut-and-tie model was used in the design. The reinforcement provided for the main tie is 2 layers of 5 #9 bars. The anchorages of these bars are provided by means of standard 90-deg hooks. Reinforcement details are given and discussed.
