BUS PRIORITIZATION MEASURES IN NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA

This article is authored by team members of the 9th International Transit Studies Program (ITSP) mission held October 29-November 15, 1998. The mission's theme was "Revitalizing Urban Public Transport in Australia and New Zealand." The article focuses on bus prioritization measures in New Zealand and Australia, with emphasis on the countries' policies and practices of transit priority treatments that are either planned or have been implemented. Special attention is given to the implementation of bus rapid transit systems that many U.S. cities are currently planning as an alternative to capital-intensive rail systems. The authors demonstrate, by studying the public transit systems of several cities in New Zealand and Australia, that bus prioritization works best when it is integrated with land-use planning and part of a coordinated, multi-modal approach to public transport.
