STRENGTHENING PARTS OF LONDON'S TUBE

This article describes work in progress on the strengthening of Covered Ways Nos. 12 and 58 of London Underground Limited (LUL); it includes a route map. No. 12 is the stretch of the District Line between High Street Kensington and Earls Court, and No. 58 is the stretch of the Circle Line between High Street Kensington and Gloucester Road. Both 110m long structures are being strengthened to comply with the Transport Act 1968, which requires LUL to maintain, improve, or strengthen them so that they can support the load from expensive residences above. The present tunnels are spanned by cast iron girders and brick jack-arches between them; they are weakening, and being underpinned with a relieving structure of curved-top fabricated beams. The only possible solutions were to replace the roof, strengthen it, or make it redundant. The first possibility cannot be applied, because it would damage the buildings above. LUL's policy is to make the cast iron elements redundant wherever possible, and strengthen the roof elsewhere. Little damage was found to the structure, but some track will need to be lowered to improve existing vertical clearance for trains. No. 58 was improved during a ten-week closure of the Circle Line in Summer 1999, and No. 12 will be improved during a similar District Line closure in Spring 2000.
