AN INTERNATIONAL SOURCEBOOK OF AUTOMOBILE DEPENDENCE IN CITIES 1960-1990

This book represents an update and extension of the data and analyses component of "Cities and Automobile Dependence: An International Sourcebook" by Peter Newman and Jeffrey Kenworthy, published initially by Gower Publishing in England in 1989 and then reprinted under the Avebury imprint. That original book contained an extensive set of land use, transportation and energy data on 32 major cities in North America, Australia, Europe and the more developed part of Asia for the years 1960, 1970 and 1980. The book has since become a standard reference work. Not only does it provide a basic set of data which gives an insight into the extent of commitment to the car within many cities, and the associated land use patterns, but it also provides some policy perspectives on what might be done to combat the growing problems associated with automobile dependence. The present book updates all the data for the original cities to a 1990 or 1991 base year (depending on the year of the national census in each country), and extends the coverage of cities to 46 major global metropolitan areas. The historical data for the previous three decades are also included, with minor changes. West Berlin and Moscow are excluded in the present book. Another major difference in the present book, compared to its predecessor, is the inclusion of a separate detailed data base, chiefly on the economic and environmental characteristics of the urban transportation systems in 37 of the metropolitan regions in the book.
