ANALYSIS OF PULLOUT TESTS FOR PLANAR REINFORCEMENTS IN SOIL. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE
A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by M. Abramento and A.J. Whittle, published in this journal (Volume 121, Number 6, June 1995) is presented. The discussion raises several questions about the physical interpretation of the modified shear-lag analysis used in the mechanics of composites when analyzing the load-transfer behavior for pullout tests with extensible, planar reinforcement. It is asserted that the important problem of predicting the tensile stress distribution and load-elongation response of planar reinforcement in confined conditions was not solved correctly and that the use of shear-lag analysis for soil matrices caused significant contradictions with logical development of theoretical models and observed behavior of evaluated materials. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
