THE BASIC FRICTION AND WEAR CHARACTERISTICS OF BRAKE DISKS AND LININGS IN TRAIN BRAKES ON THE NARROW-GAGE LINES

Cast iron disc has been used in train brakes since 1953 in Japan. However, since there were some problems of wear resistance and heat cracks, different kinds of disc materials have been sought since 1975. Lining materials were changed from asbestos composite to non-asbestos composite in 1990. A variety of discs and lining materials are presently in use. In this study, high speed friction tests as well as bench tests with combinations of different discs and linings have been made; basic friction and wear characteristics have also been examined.
