BOND STRENGTH OF REINFORCEMENT IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE CONCRETE: ROLE OF SILICA FUME, CASTING POSITION, AND SUPERPLASTICIZER DOSAGE. DISCUSSION

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by B.S. Hamad, and M.S. Itani, published in this journal (Volume 95, Number 5, September-October 1998), is presented. The discussion analyzes the published test results and evaluates the effect of silica fume and superplasticizers on bond strength. The discusser shows that the addition of silica fume in the concrete mix does not have a negative effect on bond strength and contends that the opposite conclusion was obtained by the authors because of two problems: the concrete compressive strength of specimens without silica fume was smaller than that of specimens with silica fume; and the authors did not consider that the bond stress distribution influences the bond strength. The discusser believes that, instead of normalized loads, the absolute value of loads should be used to compare the beam stiffness.
