UNINTENTIONAL INJURY DEATHS UP 1% IN 1997
Unintentional injury deaths increased in 1997, according to provisional estimates from the National Safety Council. The death total was 94,000, an increase of 1% from 1996. Motor vehicle deaths accounted for 42,900 of these, which was a 1% decrease from 1996. The 1997 death total for unintentional work injuries was approximately 5,100, up 2% from 1996. Unintentional injury deaths in the home totaled about 27,000, up 2% from 1996. Approximately 21,400 deaths were due to unintentional public nonmotor vehicle injuries in 1997, also a 2% increase.
