OVERVIEW OF CALTRANS ACCELERATED PAVEMENT TESTING PILOT PROJECT
This paper presents an overview of the California Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) project, including a summary of the results from the pilot project. The California APT project involves the Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) developed in South Africa, and laboratory testing using equipment and methods developed as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program Project A-003A (SHRP A-003A). The objectives of the pilot project were to demonstrate the capabilities of the HVS and SHRP A-003A systems, and obtain data using those systems regarding 1) the relative fatigue and rutting performance of dense-graded asphalt concrete and asphalt-rubber hot mix gap-graded overlays; and 2) the increase in rutting caused by channelization of wheel loads that would result from Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems-Advanced Vehicle Control Systems.
