PERFORMANCE TESTS UNDER ACCELERATED LOADING WITH THE LINTRACK TEST FACILITY IN THE NETHERLANDS

Accelerated Load Testing can play a major role in identifying distress mechanisms, improving performance models and validating calculation models. LINTRACK (LINear TRACKing apparatus) is the heavy vehicle simulator for pavement testing of Delft University of Technology, enabling both long-term performance tests and accurately positioned dynamic response measurements. In co-operation with the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, a pavement structure consisting of 0.15m gravel-sand-asphalt on a sand subgrade was tested. The pavement was instrumented with transversal and longitudinal asphalt strain gauges at the bottom of the asphalt layer, soil pressure cells in the subgrade and thermocouples at various positions in the structure. This paper discusses the preliminary results of the performance measurements on the first test section. An analysis is made of the strong variation of the shape and magnitude of the asphalt strain signals with temperature and the development of the signals as loading progresses.
