THE AUSTROADS SIMPLIFIED-MECHANISTIC OVERLAY (ASMOL) PROCEDURE

Following the widespread use of mechanistic pavement design procedures in Australia in the late 1980's, it was apparent that a mechanistically based overlay design procedure was needed. Recently these new overlay design procedures have been published by AUSTROADS, the national association of Australian state road authorities. Two design procedures are provided; a fully mechanistic and a simplified mechanistic overlay design. The development of the AUSTROADS Simplified Mechanistic Overlay (ASMOL) procedure for Benkelman Beam and Falling Weight Deflectometer are discussed. The objective of the project was to derive procedures which enable pavement life and strengthening requirements to be estimated from knowledge of layer thicknesses, material types, and surface deflections measured by the range of deflection testing devices currently used in Australia. This paper outlines the AUSTROADS Simplififed Mechanistic Overlay (ASMOL) procedure.
