PREDICTION OF RUT DEPTH IN ASPHALT PAVEMENTS

Rutting has been one of the major problems in asphalt pavement engineering since it deteriorates not only performance but also serviceability of the pavement. Proper evaluation of rut depth can be an essential factor for economic management of asphalt pavement. This study descibes a prediction method of rut depth in asphalt pavement which consists of pavement material characterization, structural analysis, and rut depth evaluation. Effectiveness of this method is examined through comparison with the experimental data obtained from a full-scale road test. An attempt is made to evaluate rut depths in asphalt pavements with a crushed stone base-course which have experienced excessive rutting. It is shown that the prediction method gives reasonable estimates of rut depths and their variations with load applications for the asphalt pavements with a slag base-course. For the pavements with a crushed stone base-course, it is suggested that better estimates can be obtained by taking into account the deteriorated state of the material.
