YOUNG PEDESTRIANS AND THEIR ABILITY TO MOVE SAFELY IN TRAFFIC

Child pedestrians are far more at risk than grown-ups, and younger children more so than older ones. Research from several countries around the world supports this fact. However, in much of contemporary traffic safety research and statistics, children between 5 and 9 years of age are treated as one group. This may obscure possible differences within this age group by giving too positive an impression of competencies of the smallest children within this group. Findings like this have prompted Norwegian authorities to question whether or to what degree children of 6 to 7 years are qualified as pedestrians in traffic and whether they are worse off than children above 7 years old. This paper investigates the physiological, perceptual and cognitive abilities of children 6 to 7 years to deal with traffic demands.
