LANDSLIDES: INVESTIGATION AND MITIGATION. CHAPTER 2 - SOCIOECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF LANDSLIDES

Chapter 2 addresses the socioeconomic significance of landslides. It points out that landslides are responsible for considerably greater socioeconomic losses than is generally recognized and that government agencies and those who formulate policy need to develop a better understanding of the socioeconomic significance of landslides. The chapter continues with discussions of future landslide activity; economic losses caused by landslides, both in the United States and in other countries; landslide casualties; and the positive effects of landslides. In conclusion, it is stated that estimated landslide losses in Japan, the nation most severely affected by landslides, are estimated to be $4 billion annually, while in the United States, Italy, and India, total annual economic losses due to landslides have been estimated to range from $1 billion to $2 billion. Also, it is pointed out that, on the basis of worldwide data for 1971-1974, nearly 600 people a year are killed by landslides, and in the United States there are an estimated 25 to 50 landslide deaths a year.
