AN INTEGRATED TRANSPORT STRATEGY FOR A EUROPEAN REGION

Strathclyde Region has recently carried out a major revision of its Transport Policies and Programmes. This review was the subject of extensive public consultation during 1992. The response to the consultation was in general very supportive and as a result an updated Transport Policies and Programmes Document (TPP8) has recently been produced. The new policies take account of the fact that it is no longer considered to be acceptable on environmental grounds to attempt to provide additional road space to accommodate the anticipated increased traffic resulting from increased car ownership. The corollary of this is an acceptance that to maintain high levels of accessibility there will require to be greater investment in quality public transport systems. The revised policies however recognise the fact that some new road building will be required both to provide environmental benefits and to ensure that the economic vitality of the Region does not suffer.
