The author discusses some of the latest developments at SEMT Pielstick with regard to marine diesel engines. Two leading points discussed are: the excellent service results of the PC40L engine, leading to its new rating; and new ideas on achieving higher safety margins in the operation of four-stroke diesel engines, including the improvement of crankshaft reliability and the issuance of quantified values for combustion hardness.
