ECONOMICAL AND RELIABLE FUEL TREATMENT WITH FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY

The original filtrator produced by Boll and Kirch, Hamburg, for heavy fuel oil treatment was developed to treat the fuel as a whole with the help of water separation, solids removal through woven filters, and sedimentation to reduce the amount of sludge. Today, the filtrator is instead regarded as an adjunct to centrifugal cleaning of the fuel. The purposes of filtration technology are enumerated and the technology itself explained. Details are then given about Boll and Kirch filtrators embodying the Z-Module concept--where "Z" stands for "Zurbringermodul" (feeder module), involving micron filtration after the day tank in the feeder and pressure system. Operational results for four vessels using Z-module filtrators are discussed and tabulated.
