EXPERIENCES WITH SDZ-SHIPS
West Germany "Schiff der Zukunft" (SdZ) R&D project brought shipowners, shipyards, institutes, universities, industry and trade unions together to work on a concept involving the reduction of ship operating costs through the lowering of fuel consumption and through crew workload reductions that would enable smaller crews without loss of safety. By 1989, nine ships of the SdZ type had entered service. The author discusses experiences with these ships, the results of which have generally been excellent. There is a subjective feeling, however, common to all the ship crews, that some of the parts installed are too sophisticated.
