WORLD'S FIRST CONTRA-ROTATING PROPELLER SYSTEM SUCCESSFULLY FITTED TO A MERCHANT SHIP
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI), Japan, has been involved since 1983 in the development of a contrarotating propeller system to be applied on large merchant ships. The company's success in retrofitting such a system to the car carrier TOYOFUJI NO.5 in August 1988 is described. The subsequent sea trials demonstrated a 16% energy savings. The ship is in service between Japan and Southeast Asia, and the contrarotating propeller system has been operating satisfactorily. MHI's success revolved around the development of a special plain bearing to overcome the long-standing technical barrier of insufficient lubrication between the inner shaft and bearing rotating with the outer shaft in the reverse direction.
