THE MAK C-ENGINES AND RETROFITTING AN ICEBREAKER

The first part of this two-part paper discusses the design philosophy behind the MaK C-series engines. The features of the engine include: soft combustion accompanied by low thermal load; bed plates and crankcases of high-strength castings; elasticity and rigidity for the pistons and cylinder liners; low friction running gear and heavy-oil-resistant plain bearings; and a hefty turbocharger boost for high torque. The second part of the paper describes the retrofitting of the LOUIS S. ST. LAURENT, a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, to modify her hull and give her a state-of- the-art AC/DC system employing five Krupp MaK type 16M453C diesel engines. It is expected that these engines will reduce operating costs by approximately 40% in comparison with those of the steam plant they replaced.
