ECONOMY AND RELIABILITY--WHO PAYS?

Shipowners would like marine diesel engines that could run endlessly without maintenance, burning a minimum amount of fuel of the worst possible quality. Yet, to sell, ships must be minimally priced, which makes the shipbuilder interested in a cheap engine. The question asked here is that of who is to pay for the better technology required to meet the shipowners' performance requirements. The issues involved in this fundamental conundrum are reviewed, along with their implications for future engine design.
