ECONOMY AND RELIABILITY IN THE NEW TANKER ERA--A TANKER OWNER'S COMMENTS
The author sees the crude oil tanker industry as being on the threshold of a new era that will see most existing large tankers scrapped by the mid-1990s and orders placed for a "New Breed" of replacements. Economy and reliability are aspects of ship operation that will be of utmost concern to the owners of this new generation of tankers. Brief reflections are offered on past events since the tanker building boom of the mid 1970s. The probable characteristics of the "New Breed" tankers are enumerated. Potential problems that are design- and construction-related are discussed, followed by a look at operation-related problems, particularly those of crew training and fuel quality. The final comments are about spare parts, with it being noted that owners would welcome tighter control by licensors over the manufacturing processes of licensees.
