FIELD OBSERVATIONS OF SHIP BEHAVIOUR AT BERTH

This paper deals with work carried out in Iceland as part of a joint Nordic research project to develop knowledge about ship behavior at a berth for use as a tool in improving the design of smaller harbors. It begins with a general description of ship behavior at a berth and goes on to discuss the instruments developed to measure ship motions; the field interviews and measurements; the analysis of field data; the comparison between field and model measurements; definitions of working conditions and safe mooring conditions; and the criteria for acceptable ship movements in harbors, based on the results of the joint project.
