THE INFLUENCE OF SHAFT INCLINATION ON THE RELATIVE MERITS OF PROPELLERS AND WATERJETS

The author discusses the comparative merits of water jets and propellers from both a technical and an economic viewpoint. It is pointed out that water jets can offer comparable (or in some cases superior) propulsive efficiency. In making comparisons, however, it is necessary to recognize that problems of shaft inclination can have an adverse effect on the real efficiency of conventional propellers. Genuine propeller optimization can be achieved by ensuring that the shafts are inclined at an appreciable angle to the water flow. According to the author, if this consideration is incorporated into the design process, propellers, in the main, still have a higher overall propulsive efficiency than water jets.
