TOTAL SYSTEMS APPROACH TO FUEL OIL CLEANING
The introduction of equipment to clean low-cost, high-density, heavy fuel represented a drastic change for shipowners and their crews. The configuration and operation of such systems are described and are clarified by several schematic drawings. The point is made that although a high-speed centrifugal separator may be the major component in an oil cleaning system, detailed consideration must also be given to the specification of other components and auxiliary equipment in the system, and to the total design. The performance of the separators that do the cleaning is highly dependent upon how the oil is handled and prepared before it enters the separators.
