THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRANES
Developments in the design and capabilities of cranes for the maritime and offshore industries are briefly reviewed. The types of cranes covered include shipboard cranes, offshore heavy-lift cranes, single-boom cranes and double-boom cranes. The most significant changes are those in the electrical area. It is noted that because most lifting processes are quite complicated, they do not lend themselves to total automation or robotization; semi-automation, however, is usually feasible.
