DYNAMIC ANALYSIS AS A TOOL FOR OPEN-SEA MOORING SYSTEM DESIGN

The effect of the principal cable parameters on the dynamic tension is studied in the linear and nonlinear regimes. Tables and graphs are provided to estimate the equivalent stiffness and natural frequencies of a cable, while it is shown that the major cable parameter for its overall dynamic performance is the ratio of the equivalent elastic stiffness to catenary stiffness. Methods to change the dynamic performance of the cable through this parameter are outlined as a design tool for open-sea mooring systems.
