BLISTERING OF FIBREGLASS BOAT HULLS
It is possible to analyze the fluids within the osmotic blisters forming in the hulls of polyester-glass boats and the authors present some results taken from several boats after a few years in service. About 1000 standard panels were then subjected to blistering trials and the analytical results related to panel constituents and fabrication history. Many of the panels were painted. Several organic substances were found in the blister fluids and cations were also determined semi-quantitatively. The fundamental reasons for blistering in boats can now be seen more clearly; countermeasures are proposed.
