ROADSIDE MANAGEMENT PLANS IN THE ROADS CORPORATION, VICTORIA

The Roads Corporation, Victoria (Vic Roads) has commenced preparation of roadside management plans (RMP) on a trial basis in a number of the eight VIC ROADS Regions in the State. This chapter reports on the objectives and functions of roadside management plans and the expectations of the associated approach to roadside management. The steps in preparation of a RMP are suggested and a framework outlined. A format being tested includes three basic documents: General Management Goals, Local Management Tasks and a Specific Feature Listing. Assessment of roadside vegetation to determine its significance or conservation status is a basic requirement of any management plan. Some brief comments are made on current assessment activities in Victoria. Finally, two Vic Roads case studies are reported with the expectation that by sharing our knowledge and experience the process of roadside assessment and management might be improved. For the covering entry of the conference, see IRRD abstract no. 843352.
