SOUTH AFRICAN ROAD RESERVES: VALUABLE CONSERVATION AREAS?

The nature and extent of the South African road network is briefly described, with particular reference to servitude widths and the extent of the road reserve. The policies and attitudes of the various road authorities, with regard to road reserve revegetation and maintenance, are also presented. The results of a survey of road reserves undertaken through a number of different biomes and vegetation types are discussed. It was found that some South African road reserves do, in certain vegetation types, constitute valuable conservation areas, but that this is more fortuitous than the result of any deliberate policy. The vegetation types where this is the case are those where the adjoining native vegetation has been largely transformed by agricultural or other human activities. These areas tend to be categorized by having a flat to undulating topography, better quality soils, and moderate to good rainfall.
