AUTOMATED CONSTRUCTION FIELD-DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

There is a need for innovative data management systems that use the latest in computerized and automatic identification technologies to cope with the expanding quantities of construction data and construction problems. This paper makes recommendations for developing such a system for state departments of transportation. The system will provide better data orgainzation and flow, so promoting reduced paperwork processing time, and more time for managing the construction process. A recent research project for the Indiana Department of Transportation surveyed other state DOTs to determine if such a system existed and obtain a description of it. The most mature system was found in Connecticut. To deal with construction supervision problems, several management sytems were identified and developed: the Construction Management and Reporting system, the Preconstruction Management system, the Executive Reporting system and the Financial Management Information System. State responses to the survey are tabulated.
