EMERGING ISSUES IN TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

This paper summarizes the current state of the art in facility management, and identifies key issues and research directions that need to be addressed in the future. The paper reviews model developments for forecasting facility condition, and the impacts of maintenance, rehabilitation, and strategy selection. The role of new technology for condition assessment, rehabilitation and repair methods, new materials, and computer-based systems, such as knowledge-based expert systems, decision support systems, and geographic information systems are also reviewed. It is noted that a broad base of public, agency, political, and technical support is required to shift emphasis from the provision of new infrastructure to better management of existing infrastructure. This includes providing the financial backing for such projects and removing the legal and organizational barriers that inhibit the introduction of innovative strategies.
