FAILURE MECHANISMS ASSOCIATED WITH PLASTIC LINED PIPING SYSTEMS

Case histories analyzing failures of chlorinated polyether, vinylidene fluoride, and polypropylene lined steel pipe are reported. Failures occurred in 45 to 75%, 71 to 120 C sulfuric acid, 88%, 49 C, 140 psi sulfuric acid and butyl rubber processing 120 C systems mainly at flanges. Failures were attributed to tensile loading accompanying cyclic thermal influences, incidental defects from manufacturing processes, and in one instance to operational vacuum accompanying low weather temperatures. Fracture of the plastic and adhesion failures were examined with scanning electron microscope. Manufacturing variables contributed to the effects. /Author/
