POTENTIAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH RISING GROUNDWATER LEVELS IN THE DEEP AQUIFER BENEATH LONDON . TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION 90. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION 90 CONFERENCE, ORGANIZED BY THE INSTITUTION OF MINING AND METALLURGY, LONDON, 3-4 APRIL, 1990

This paper describes the findings of the CIRIA report into the rising groundwater levels under London, and the effect this could have on tunnels in the vicinity. The study shows that tunnels in the vicinity of or within the Woolwich and Reading beds, and strata below, which are at present in unsaturated ground could be affected by the rising groundwater levels. Potential problems are: increased ingress of water, deformation of tunnel linings and the possibility of increase of chemical aggressivity of the groundwater. A number of tunnels are described where potential problems may occur. These include those of British Telecom, the Post Office Railway, Thames Water sewers and the London Underground. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828810.
