INFORMATION SYSTEM KEEPS STATE'S VEHICLES ROLLING
The Illinois Department of Transportation's maintenance management information system, now in its third year of operation, provides immediate access to current information about equipment, supplies, personnel, work plans, needs surveys, daily reports, etc. In effect, it provides all the tools required to manage highway and bridge maintenance and justify annual budget requests to the department and state legislature. Illinois has the third largest highway system in the nation--135,310 miles--and 17,529 miles are state maintained. The maintenance management information system manages 2600 people, 28,000 items of equipment worth over $100 million, and an annual budget of nearly $200 million.
