ROLLER COMPACTED CONCRETE PAVES FACTORY ROADS

Saturn Corporation, a subsidiary of General Motors, is rapidly completing its new $1.9 billion auto manufacturing and assembly plant on a 2500-acre site near Spring Hill, Tennessee, about 35 miles south of Nashville. More than 650,000 sq yd of 7-in.-thick, roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement is being placed, half on access roads and the main entrance way to the huge plant and the remainder on parking and staging areas. Two ABG Titan 410S asphalt pavers place the RCC pavement atop a hard base consisting of 4- to 6-in. compacted crusher-run limestone. The German-made pavers have double tamping bars located in front of the vibrating screed that strike and compact the surface of the pavement 1400 times per minute as the pavers move forward. An Ingersoll-Rand DA50 double-drum roller with bevel-edged drums achieves nearly a 1/2 in. of additional compaction on its first pass over the extruded slab. Two to five additional passes by the same roller, or by a Bomag BW160AD, complete the compaction. The rollers also work and finish the surface of the slab. A paving crew of 30 to 35 normally works six 9-hr. days a week, averaging about 1000 cu yd per day.
