ESTIMATION OF JOINT DEFORMATIONS, POTENTIAL LEAKAGE AND LINING STRESSES FOR A PLANNED URBAN ROAD TUNNEL. LARGE ROCK CAVERNS - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, HELSINKI, FINLAND, 25-28 AUGUST 1986. VOLUME 2

Three litres of water inflow per minute per 100 meters of tunnel length has been suggested as a general limit to prevent building damage when tunnelling in rock beneath Oslo's clay-filled depressions. Careful control of rock displacements by bolting, pre-injection, and final cast concrete linings designed for 50 meters external water pressure are among the design measures for planned parallel three-lane tunnels comprising Oslo's "Fjellinjen" road improvement project. The paper describes preliminary joint characterization and discrete element modelling to investigate potential changes in joint apertures caused by excavation. The modelling was also designed to investigate potential lining stresses when resisting 50 meters of external water pressure. Characterization of joints in drillcore, and numerical modelling were performed using the scale-dependent joint roughness (jrc) and joint wall strength (jcs) coefficients in a new sub-routine incorporated in Cundall's distinct element (udec) code. This allows calculation of joint closures, openings or shearing magnitudes and resultant joint fluid conducting apertures around the disturbed zone caused by tunnel excavation. Subsequent modelling of a concrete lining placed following excavation-induced joint displacements indicates the potential for realistic modelling of tunnel-liner interaction, where both matrix and joint water pressures apply external loads to water-tight tunnel linings. The model can also be used for investigating joint deformations caused by internal instead of external fluid pressures in rock storage caverns and pressure tunnels.
