UNDERGROUND EXCAVATION, METHODS OF INVESTIGATION AND ROCK CLASSIFICATION APPLIED IN TUNNEL FOR PUMPED STORAGE SCHEME BB. LARGE ROCK CAVERNS - PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, HELSINKI, FINLAND, 25-28 AUGUST 1986. VOLUME 1

The paper deals with methodology of engineering geological investigation of limestone rock masses, in which a long distance tunnel for pumped storage scheme B.Basta in Yugoslavia has been constructed. A detail engineering geological study of the immediate and wider surrounding area was prepared on the basis of different geological activities, using remote sensing and aerial photographs analyses, as well as field studies of outcrops. Different geophysics methods were applied in order to give additional information regarding the most convenient choice for the final tunnel alignment. From the practical point of view the most important part of the paper is related to the rock classification mostly based on the competence of the rock and the origin, type and frequency of fissuration. Several groups of quazihomogeneous rock types are established. Based on this classfication primary and pre-stressed grouting works were executed. In addition, the programme, criteria and control of prestressed grouting works were established. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 810647. (Author/TRRL)
