COMMUTER PARKING LOTS - VANDALISM AND DETERRENCE
The results are presented of a survey of the nature and extent of theft and vandalism at commuter parking lots in Connecticut, and recommendations are suggested for their solution. There was difficulty in obtaining hard data on the crime rate at many of the lots. The conditions that exist at many lots that are considered to be contributory to the occurrence of theft and vandalism are listed and discussed. Recommendations (16) for security improvements for existing and proposed parking facilities are listed. The Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau of Planning and Research's recommendations for fostering greater parking lot security are discussed: improved communications; better site planning; security visibility; and access control. Other security measures such as allowing the use of space on lots by vendors (this would discourage criminal activity) are also noted.
