INTERMODAL MOVEMENT OF BULK COMMODITIES
The concept of bulk transfer between rail and truck modes is not new. Matlack, the largest bulk trucking company in the United States, has been engaged in rail-truck transfer for over 20 years at its Norristown, Pennsylvania terminal. What is new, given recent freedom from most economic regulation, is the ability to expand the use of bulk transfers between rail and truck modes to gain improved service and greater economy for the shipper. Bulk and containerized carriers are pioneering new intermodal paths, and are even developing containerized bulk movements.
